Certification Examination Requirements

The CFP Certification Examination is a 10-hour examination, divided into one four-hour session (Friday afternoon) and two three-hour sessions (Saturday). The exam is offered three times a year: March, July and November. The exam is offered at a number of locations across the United States, internationally on a case-by-case basis.

Additional Requirements

While passing the comprehensive Certified Financial Planner exam may be the most important qualification for receiving the CFP certification, it is far from the only one. Before you pursue your CFP designation, make sure you are aware of these additional requirements.

Candidates must meet educational and experience requirements, and ethical standards to be awarded the CFP designation. For example, you will need a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college. You are permitted to take the exam without a bachelor's degree, but if you pass, you will be required to earn that degree within five years for your CFP certification to be valid.

In addition to proof of satisfactory education, you will need to show you have sufficient financial planning experience. Acceptable financial planning experience is two years of apprenticeship or three years of full-time personal financial planning. Finally, you will need to pass the CFP Board's candidate fitness standards, which means you agree to follow the Board's ethical standards, reveal any employment termination or criminal history and pass a background check.

Continuing Education Requirements

Candidates are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Credit hours may be earned in the form of courses, seminars, workshops, technical meetings, self-study packages, or on-line courses.
