Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS)

Searching for CEBS training? Then you've come to the right place!

ABTrainingCenter.com offers Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) courses for those individuals interested in earning the prestigious Certified Employee Benefit Specialist designation.

About The Designation

In the employee benefits and compensation field, the oldest and most respected professional credential is the CEBS - the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist.

The Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBSŪ) designation is awarded to individuals who complete the required number of CEBS examinations, meet the pre-certification standards, and agree to abide by the Principles of Conduct.

CEBS was established in 1977 through a partnership of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The International Foundation, the largest educational organization in the employee benefits field, is responsible for the overall administration of the program. The Wharton School, one of the preeminent business schools in the U.S., oversees academic content and standards.

Curriculum

Candidates must pass an examination for the following six required courses and two elective courses to earn the CEBS designation:

Required Courses
  • GBA 1 - Employee Benefits: Concepts and Health Care Benefits
  • GBA 2 - Employee Benefits: Design, Administration and Other Welfare Benefits
  • RPA 1 - Retirement Plans: Basic Features and Defined Contribution Approaches
  • RPA 2 - Retirement Plans: Defined Benefit Approaches and Plan Administration
  • CMS 1 - Human Resources and Compensation Management
  • CMS 2 - Compensation Concepts and Principles
Electives (Choose 2)
  • RPA 3 - Asset Management
  • GBA 3 - Health Economics
  • CMS 3 - Executive Compensation and Compensation Issues
  • PFP1 - Personal Financial Planning 1: Concepts and Principles
  • PFP2 - Tax and Estate Planning Techniques
Each course is designed for independent study, so students can study for the CEBS designation at their own pace. Most candidates average 50 -75 hours of study time per course. Courses can be taken in any order.

If you hold the Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation or have completed any of (HS312, HS325, HS326, HS328) through the American College, you may be able to exempt two of the courses above.

Examination Requirements

Each exam is a two-hour, 100 question, computer-administered exam; a pass grade is based on scoring approximately 70% on the examination. Instructions for taking an exam will be mailed with your enrollment materials.

National exams are given throughout the year at local testing centers, with your results provided immediately upon the completion of your exam. Contact Prometric testing centers (800-226-7955) for more information or to schedule your exam. The examination application fee is $295, and payment of the examination application fee establishes eligibility for a 3-month period (quarter) of testing.

A formal certificate is mailed automatically upon passing the required examinations for the designation. If you receive a non-passing grade for a CEBS exam, you may reapply for the exam at the reduced fee of $135. You may retake the exam during the same testing quarter or a future testing quarter.

Additional Requirements

Candidates are not required to meet any experience or educational requirements as a prerequisite for pursuing the CEBS designation.

Continuing Education Requirements

Certificants are not required to complete continuing education (CE) requirements to keep their designation active.
