About This Course:
This training program contains 12 of our payroll administration courses, and covers everything from worker classification to handling garnishments to recordkeeping.

Each of these courses is approximately 90 minutes in length (for a total of approximately 15 hours of training), and provides specific details, tips, and hints on the stated topic. Again, each of these topics provide specifics about the stated topic; if you prefer a broader view of payroll in general, then we suggest you take our Certified Payroll Administrator course, which includes 40-plus hours of training and covers all aspects of payroll.

THE MODULES
  • Worker Classification
Independent contractors may be a necessary and strategic component to your business. If so, you need to know the rules regarding what makes a worker an independent contractor versus an employee - or risk substantial fines and penalties. During this training session, you will learn how to properly use and pay independent contractors - and assist in avoiding costly worker-classification audits.

  • Fringe Benefits
This training session will help you to determine if your fringe benefits are currently being offered to employees correctly in order to ensure that they are compliant with federal and state payroll tax regulations. This may assist you in avoiding a costly audit in the future. We'll cover the IRS guidelines for the items that they will focus on when an employment tax audit is being performed, as well as tips on how to perform your own internal review to catch anything that may actually cause an audit.

  • Expense Reimbursement
This course covers the rules and requirements for expense reimbursements, as well as best practices for processing expense reimbursements either in payroll or accounts payable.

  • Travel Pay
While travel pay laws vary by state, the rules governing travel pay vary based on a number of factors, including whether workers are traveling on assignment, driving company vehicles or their own cars, etc. And some of these factors, such as "commuting time", "waiting time", or "on-call time" are additionally governed by FLSA rules - and oft times are rife with employee fraud. This training session covers the IRS rules regarding what is considered travel versus commute and what is an allowable expense versus taxable wages.

  • Executive Taxation
This training session provides a detailed review of executive payments and/or deductions - plus the best methods to handle the taxation of such payments.

  • Garnishments
This training session gives you tools to better understand the responsibilities that a company has regarding garnishments, Child Support orders, and levies under state and federal guidelines such as Consumer Credit Protection Act, IRS levy requirements, and state-specific levy and garnishment withholding requirements.

  • Multi-State Taxation
This training session will help you to know the taxation and reporting requirements for all states where your organization has employees working - or in some cases - living.

  • Unclaimed Paychecks
Amazingly, departing employees don't always collect all wages owed to them. Unfortunately, as a payroll professional, that becomes your problem! This training session will review the laws of all 50 states with regards to unclaimed wages.

  • Payroll Audits
Payroll tax audits are increasing at both the state and federal levels. Unfortunately, many employers are simply unprepared for an audit. Get ahead of potential trouble with this training session from Mark Schwartz, a former payroll tax auditor who will give you a proactive review of how your payroll department can catch some potential mistakes - and save your organization from fines or penalties!

  • Documentation
In this course you will learn the best way to document your payroll procedures. We will discuss how to get started on the process and not become bogged down, as well as the simple steps to insure your procedures are correctly documented, clear, and concise.

  • Recordkeeping
This training session covers the rules for identifying, filing, retaining, protecting, and destroying your important payroll records.

  • Waiving Penalties
Late filing...TIN matching...Errors on returns...Any of these items may result in a penalty from either a state or federal agency (along with the impression of a payroll department that is not compliant or prudent in their filings!). But many times these penalties can be waived - if you know how! And that is where this training session can help.
