What Does A Certified Internal Auditor Do?

A Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is a certification offered to accountants who conduct internal audits. They primarily conduct audits, review and analyze financial statements, and work with company management to ensure that proper internal controls are put in place to safeguard assets.

They also manage verification systems to detect fraud, misuse of funds, and validate transactions. In other words, they make sure people and businesses are playing by the rules and financial reports accurately reflect reality. Put simply, they review an organization's business processes to evaluate risk management procedures to rotect against fraud, theft, and misuse of the organization's assets.

How To Become A Certified Internal Auditor: CIA Qualifications

The Certified Internal Auditor certification is the undisputed professional credential for individuals whose primary responsibilities are focused upon internal auditing. The CIA certification signifies that a designee has received advanced, professional education and business tools that are applicable to the internal audit field.

Curriculum

Candidates must pass an examination for four required courses to earn the CIA certification.Required Courses
  • Part 1 - The Internal Audit Activity's Role in Governance, Risk, and Control
  • Part 2 – Conducting the Internal Audit Engagement
  • Part 3 – Business Analysis and Information Technology
  • Part 4 – Business Management Skills
Certified Internal Auditor Exam Requirements

Each exam is a 2-hour and 45 minute, 100 multiple-choice question, computer-administered exam. National exams are given throughout the year at local testing centers, with your unofficial score provided immediately upon the completion of your exam. Contact Pearson VUE at 888-804-7327 for more information or to schedule your exam. An additional exam fee may apply.

If you fail any one of the CIA exams (parts), you must wait at least 90 days before you will be able to retake that exam (part); there is no limit to the number of times a candidate can retake a failed exam.

Additional Certified Internal Auditor Exam Requirements

To be considered for Certified Internal Auditor certification, candidates must meet certain ethical, educational and experience qualifications.

An applicant must exhibit high moral and professional character and agree to abide by The IIA's Code of Ethics.

CIA candidates must hold a bachelor's degree (or higher degree) or its educational equivalent from an accredited college-level institution before their CIA application can be approved. Certain international professional designations (such as Chartered Accountant) may be accepted as equivalent to a bachelor's degree, although professional work experience will not substitute for an appropriate degree.

Candidates must also meet an experience requirement of a minimum of 24 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent (acceptable equivalent experience includes experience in audit/assessment disciplines, external auditing, quality assurance, compliance, and internal control.)

CIA Qualifications: Continuing Education Requirements

Certified Internal Auditor designees must maintain their knowledge and skills and stay abreast of improvements and current developments in their area of certification through a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirement of 80 hours of continuing education every two years for practicing CIAs. Credit will be given for subjects that contribute to the professional competence of participants.
