Certified Internal Auditor Exam Requirements

Each exam is a 2-hour and 45 minute, 100 multiple-choice question, computer-administered exam. National exams are given throughout the year at local testing centers, with your unofficial score provided immediately upon the completion of your exam. If you fail any one of the CIA exams (parts), you must wait at least 90 days before you will be able to retake that exam (part); there is no limit to the number of times a candidate can retake a failed exam.

Additional Certified Internal Auditor Exam Requirements

To be considered for Certified Internal Auditor certification, candidates must meet certain ethical, educational and experience qualifications.

An applicant must exhibit high moral and professional character and agree to abide by The IIA's Code of Ethics.

CIA candidates must hold a bachelor's degree (or higher degree) or its educational equivalent from an accredited college-level institution before their CIA application can be approved. Certain international professional designations (such as Chartered Accountant) may be accepted as equivalent to a bachelor's degree, although professional work experience will not substitute for an appropriate degree.

Candidates must also meet an experience requirement of a minimum of 24 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent (acceptable equivalent experience includes experience in audit/assessment disciplines, external auditing, quality assurance, compliance, and internal control.)

CIA Qualifications: Continuing Education Requirements

Certified Internal Auditor designees must maintain their knowledge and skills and stay abreast of improvements and current developments in their area of certification through a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirement of 80 hours of continuing education every two years for practicing CIAs. Credit will be given for subjects that contribute to the professional competence of participants.
